"My dad was a painter, and I learned to paint when I was 16 and continued to do so while working my way through college," the Kentucky native said. "My dad always said ‘The job isn't done until it's finished right,' and those words came flooding back to me when I saw that the Fresh Coat logo says ‘Painting Done Right.'"
Williams said he believes the Fresh Coat business model will allow him to grow his business into one in which his father would be proud, especially since his father actually helped with the investment. "It's pretty ironic," Williams said. "My father lived to be 84, having had an amazing life.... When he died last year, he left me some money that I'm now using toward the launch of my business."
Nothing in his past would have led him to believe he'd be following in his father's footsteps. After college, Williams earned his MBA, as did his wife. Both were climbing the corporate ladder when he opted to leave the business world about a decade ago to be a stay-at-home father to their two children.
"Now that they're 10 and 12, we decided we'd look at alternative business options," Williams said. "We looked at dozens of franchises. I've worked in various fields, so our possibilities were extensive. What we found was that in many cases, the start-up costs and the franchise fees were price prohibitive. We looked all over for franchises, then found Fresh Coat, just four blocks from our house."
The Williams family was living in Cincinnati at the time with plans to relocate to Central Kentucky. "We asked lots of questions, and Fresh Coat's team answered all of them," he said. He already has hired a client service manager, who has painting skills as well as experience directing crews of people.
"Already I can see the potential for growth throughout the region," Williams said. "Having the resources of a national organization certainly is beneficial."
Brozek said one of the company's goals is to complement the inherent abilities offranchise owners with quality marketing, training and resource materials. Williams was intrigued by the fund-raising option for the business, particularly because he always has been involved in sports, even working professionally as a referee for several years.
"Every year the kids are raising money by selling candy bars or wrapping paper," he said. "Fund-raising with painting services is something the parents can do. And it's a pretty good deal."
Williams said he also appreciated the company's marketing approach and was impressed by the EPIC system because "you're not going by the seat of your pants" to determine costs and schedules for projects.
"But the thing that was the greatest interest to me was the 24-7 call center," he said. "I know how critical it is to have a human being answering the phone. It always makes for a better business experience. "
