Three new locations of the classic fast food chain Checkers are heading to the metro Orlando, Florida area. Instead of the typical standalone sites, these new stores will be incorporated into established Walmart Supercenters.
The first new location will be approximately 2,200 square feet in a Walmart in Clermont. The second and third sites will be of a similar size, with one in a Poinciana Walmart and the other in a Kissimmee Walmart. Franchisee Salim Valini is the owner of the three new franchise businesses. He says that the Poinciana store will be open by July and the Kissimmee location should open in August or September. All three locations will create between 20 and 25 jobs in their local communities.
Valini is also planning to expand the chain even further in the future to markets in Central Florida such as Sanford, Leesburg, Lakeland, Tavares and Lake Nona. The new franchisee says he's always reviewing any site that becomes available in Walmart as a potential franchise opportunity, with growth definitely driven by Walmart availability.
A Walmart Checkers location benefits from the store's constant foot traffic, and the Walmart itself also benefits because the fast food chain can serve its employees. However, Valini, says that some of future locations he's planning for the potential Central Florida market may be freestanding, which would create some new temporary construction jobs.
Currently, Checkers is seeking franchisees in major markets across the country, including in New York, Massachusetts and California. To qualify for this franchise opportunity, you need a net worth of at least $750,000 and at least $250,000 in liquid assets. The franchise fee is $30,000 per location, with the total investment ranging from $155,400 to $1,286,743. Franchisees pay a royalty rate of 4 percent of net sales and an advertising fee of 4.5 percent of net sales.
